ARE GLUTEN-FREE PRODUCTS UNHEALTHY?

Dr. Hüseyin BÜYÜKÖZER

Gluten-free diets have gained popularity recently. However, the industry has been criticized for being unhealthy.
So, are the rumors true, and what can the industry do about it?

The sales of gluten-free products are increasing, and more people are trying to eliminate this protein from their diets. Whether for medical reasons or as an aid to weight loss, there has been a noticeable shift away from bread, grains, pasta, soups, and sauces that contain gluten.

Although it can offer a solution for those suffering from celiac disease, it may not be a healthy option for non-celiac consumers.

ARE GLUTEN-FREE PRODUCTS UNHEALTHY?

Unfortunately, the answer seems to be yes. First, they contain lower protein levels, which are essential for muscle, bone, and hormone health, and less dietary fiber, which is necessary for digestion.

Research conducted at Clemson University in South Carolina shows that addressing these deficiencies with additives leads to other issues.

Some studies suggest that consumers may choose a gluten-free diet to help with weight loss, but it could actually have the opposite effect.

Let us never forget that we live in a world where some groups, driven by the desire for lifelong profits, occupy themselves with promoting unhealthy products and steering consumers toward the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.
